Useful Resources (other organisations)

Sustainable Community Strategies

The Community Development Foundation has just published a free guide, Green Up!  It provides local people, community and volunteer groups with everything they need to work productively with their councils on environment and sustainability issues.

Green Up contains several hands-on examples from groups such as local Transition Towns, civic societies and faith groups. It also has tips from local group members who are successfully working with their council on issues relating to sustainability and the environment.

Climate Action Groups

Climate Outreach and Information Network (COIN) have created Climate Action Groups. These are groups of people who come together to take decisive action on a climate change issue of their choice over a six-month period.  The toolkit includes:

• How to plan, publicise and get the best out of your Matchmaker (the event that creates and launches the Climate Action Groups)

• A step-by-step guide to facilitating the Matchmaker and final evaluation event.

• A guide for Climate Action Group Convenors who coordinate each resulting group including tips on how to chair meetings and how to keep the momentum going.

• An appendices section including sample publicity materials and action plans.

In addition to the toolkit, COIN is offering free support and advice to those who want to set up Climate Action Groups including facilitation of the Matchmaker (the event that sets up the groups) and assistance for those looking to obtain funding to support their groups.

Going Green in your Synagogue

Synagogues can reduce the carbon footprints of their communities through adopting green practices in their buildings in addition to educating congregants on the relationship between Judaism and the environment. In this section you will find some suggestions of how your community can ‘go green’.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews passed a resolution in September 2009 at their plenary session “urging all UK Synagogues and Jewish Organisations to take practical steps, as soon as possible, to make their premises environmentally friendly and energy – efficient”.

The information in this section of the website is adapted from the toolkit sent by the Board of Deputies to each synagogue after the resolution was voted in.

Please take 10 minutes to fill out this progress questionnaire to let us know how you/your synagogue or organisation is getting on! Click here.
