How to be blue and white and green all over

(For ages 14 – 16)

Aims
- To engage the participants with Jewish sources around the theme of environmentalism.
- To involve the participants in some practical green activity that sparks ideas for further actions they can take back to their daily routine.

Rationale
Environmentalism is one of many contemporary issues that people are concerned with and this offers an opportunity to explore the relevance of Judaism in today’s society. This session should also aim to engage the participants in answering the question – How is Judaism relevant to me today? How do I shape my Jewish Identity in a way that contributes to my own and the world’s needs?

The session should also offer an example of the continual development of Judaism and encourage the participants to see themselves as part of that ‘flexible tradition’ and consider how they will contribute to its development.

Introduction 5 minutes
Explain that this session will explore the role of Judaism in tackling the challenge of Climate Change. Together we will consider whether Judaism has anything useful to offer and get creative and innovative in coming up with
ideas together.

Engaging with text 10-15 minutes
Around the room will be 6 different sets of text;

            a. Bal Tashchit with Sampson Raphael Hirsh
            b. Gen.2:15 & Gen. 1:29
            c. Kabbalah (oneness of nature, cosmos...)
            d. Green Peace – earth as 46 year old
            e. Rambam on pollution (Judaism & Ecology p136)
            f. Big Yellow Taxi

Big Yellow Taxi, Earth Song & Hate Something/Change will be playing in the background. The participants will have 10 – 15 minutes to walk around the room and read the different texts.

Each will be given a stone, a leaf, and a twig, and asked to place...

  1. The stone by the text that is the easiest to agree with and act in accordance with
  2. The leaf by the text that is either too abstract an idea for them personally (they view as ‘leafy’ or irrelevant
  3. The twig by the text that they agree with, but they think is hard to carry out in actions (as a value it may ‘snap easily’ when put into practice)
Discussion 10-15 minutes (depending on how long first part took)
Ask the participants to share some general ideas/thoughts they particularly liked/disliked. It may be helpful to use agree/disagree spectrum with sentences below to generate discussion. Explain that you will read out a sentence and then all those who agree 100% should stand up, and all those who disagree 100% should lie down. Those who are somewhere along the spectrum should represent this with their position accordingly.
  1. Judaism is a green religion
  2. Judaism says it’s nice to be green, but ultimately we are masters and owners (or at least co-owners of the world) so we can use its resources for our gain as we see fit
  3. The idea that all of nature is connected as part of a spiritual oneness is stupid – I as a human being am a far more complicated creature than a moth flying into a flame for example – it’s just hippy babble!

Green Apprentice/Dragons Den 30 minutes
Show the video from Project Better Place. Introduce an entrepreneur (facilitator taking on a role) looking to find a new green product and idea to compete with this one.  In groups (2/3/4 depending on how many present) they will be asked to create and design a prototype for a green product (a new toy, form of transport, fashion accessory, or other that they come up with) and also come up with a slogan and advert. They should use the recycled materials to make their prototype. The groups should then present their product to the entrepreneur

Summary 10 minutes
Ask the group to share any interesting thoughts or learning they had during the session. Then ask some particular questions; Do they feel Judaism has something to offer in exploring and combating climate change?
  1. Is the Project Better Place example and other consumer based attempts to combat impact of CO2 emissions helpful?
  2. Could it be that we need to STOP consuming rather than ADAPT it?
  3. Hand out the climate crisis solutions information – does anyone do any of the suggestions already?
  4. Would anyone consider changing their behaviour to join in with the effort to reduce humanity’s environmental impact?
Explain the 10:10 campaign, the Jewish Climate Campaign, and the Big Green Jewish Website.
