As part of the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, Tzedek and RSY-Netzer, supported by Big Green Jewish, held a public meeting with
Mike Freer MP.
The meeting addressed the upcoming Energy Bill in parliament, which aims to restructure and strengthen energy efficiency measures.
Campaigners and audience members raised awareness of potential amendments to the Bill and asked Mike Freer to support them. You can see some of the suggested amendments and take action to
demand a better bill. The bill is currently in its second reading so this is a great time to have you say and ensure the bill is ambitious in lowering fuel costs, combating fuel poverty, and creating more green jobs and a cleaner economy!
Mike Freer recognized the important role of NGOs such as Friends of the Earth in pushing pragmatic politicians concerned with getting elected to think beyond immediate situation to enact change to achieve long term goasl with regards to Climate Change. Nevertheless, Mike Free also shared his view that whilst this is a pressing and important issue, decrees from the top without broad public support will not enact the wide changes in society needed; "If we could solve climate change through policy the UK would have achieved it" - an allusion to the Climate Act and Britain being one of the first countries pass CO2 reduction legislation. Mike Free cited Hybrid Cars and improved emissions standards as an example of policy, public pressure, and market forces combining to achieve better environmental standards and modify corporate and individual behaviour.
The audience shared their frustration with answers to questions regarding landlords and the likely limited benefits of energy efficiency improvements for those living in rented accommodation - often those experiencing fuel poverty.
Mike Freer agreed to meet with Friends of the Earth and other campaigned to discuss possible amendments to the energy bill further.
