Jewcology

Leader of Canfei Nesharim Selected for Major ROI Innovation Grant

Jewish Innovation Foundation awards $50,000 for “Jewcology” Project

Silver Spring, MD – May 3, 2010 – Canfei Nesharim is pleased to announce that its Executive Director, Evonne Marzouk, is the leader of a team which has been selected by the ROI Innovation Fund for a $50,000 grant which will enable the creation of an expansive new set of tools to empower the entire Jewish environmental community.  Canfei Nesharim is the fiscal sponsor and implementing organization for this project.

Jewcology.com will be an open source database where Jewish environmentalists can network, share resources and learn from one another. The portal will be seeded with a rich library of Jewish-environmental resources, including curriculum, Torah teachings, program ideas, podcasts, videos, and other tools for Jewish environmental education and training.  The portal will also provide opportunities for group-forming and private spaces where smaller Jewish-environmental teams can interact.  Individuals can use Jewcology.com to create and follow Jewish-environmental blogs, search for experts, and find program resources for their communities.

“Until now, a Jewish educator or environmental activist would have to sift through 10-20 websites to find the content they need,” explained Isaac Hametz, the founder of the Israeli organization Earth’s Promise, and one of the members of the Jewcology Coordinating Committee.  “This new portal will allow Jewish-environmental organizations and individual Jewish-environmentalists worldwide to collaborate in order to avoid redundancy and wasted resources, and to reach new audiences.”

Jewish environmental leaders across the world have expressed enthusiasm at the prospect of Jewcology.com.  The grant proposal included an attachment with signatures from 135 Jewish-environmental leaders across the world, including Rabbi David Saperstein of the Religious Action Center, Sybil Sanchez of the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life, and Nigel Savage of Hazon, expressing support for this project.

Grant funds will also be used to seed the site with a rich set of Jewish-environmental content and to organize two Regional Leadership Summits to empower Jewish-environmentalists in their community engagement.

This project is a collaboration, led by Marzouk, of 17 young Jewish activists, all graduates of the ROI Summit.  ROI is a global community of young Jewish innovators, created by Lynn Schusterman.  The annual ROI Summit gathers 120 young Jewish innovators from all over the world in Israel.  Many of the 17 ROIers offered volunteer or below-market rate services to make this project a possibility.

Numerous existing Jewish-environmental resources will be uploaded to the site during the beta phase, in partnership with other Jewish environmental organizations.  In addition, a new set of Jewish-environmental resources on 17 “fundamental” Jewish environmental topics (including Jewish-environmental teachings, speaker materials, study sheets, podcasts, videos, and program suggestions) will also be created and uploaded.

In addition, two Regional Leadership Summits for Jewish Environmentalists will be organized in 2010-2011.  The leadership trainings will include opportunities for networking and skills building, and will also include sessions and direct training to help attendees become active participants on the Jewcology portal.

“The long-term goal of this project is to build a multi-denominational, multi-generational, regionally diverse community of Jewish environmental activists, who can learn from one another and from an expanding set of Jewish-environmental resources, how to educate their communities about our Jewish responsibility to protect the environment,” explained Marzouk.  “Canfei Nesharim is thrilled to have the opportunity to implement this project on behalf of the entire Jewish environmental community.”

What is Jewcology?
Jewcology.com is a project of 17 graduates of ROI, who have come together to create a resource for the entire Jewish-environmental community.  The long-term goal of this project is to build a multi-denominational, multi-generational, regionally diverse community of Jewish environmental activists, who are learning from one another and from an expanding set of Jewish-environmental resources, how to educate their communities about our Jewish responsibility to protect the environment.

The project includes 3 pieces:
  • A web-based portal for networking and resource sharing amongst Jewish environmentalists
  • Creation of a rich new source of Jewish-environmental content
  • Regional leadership summits for skills development and networking

The Jewcology Portal is currently under development and scheduled for a summer launch.  The portal will allow you to:
  • Browse and search a rich set of Jewish-environmental resources on various category “tags”
  • Create and maintain your own individual blog
  • Browse and follow other Jewish environmentalists’ blogs, including the Jewcology Blog
  • “Follow” people to see what they are doing and sharing.
  • Search other Jewish Environmentalists for specific areas of expertise.
  • Create private and public “communities” on items of shared interest
  • Post and learn about other Jewish environmental campaigns and events
  • Browse and purchase products from numerous Jewish Environmental organizations
  • and more!
This project includes the development of a rich new set of Jewish environmental content which will be posted on the site.  New content will include:
  • articles
  • speaker guides
  • discussion guides
  • program suggestions
  • videos
  • podcasts
  • New resources will cover a comprehensive set of 17 topics which are essential to Jewish-environmental thinking.  These topics will also be linked to numerous Jewish holidays and Torah portions.  Tentatively the 17 topics to be developed are:
  • Bal Tashchit
  • Tzaar Baalei Chaim
  • Damages to Neighbors
  • Relating to the Land
  • Rain and water
  • Energy
  • Consumerism/ Wealth
  • Recycling
  • Noach
  • Food
  • Health
  • Shiluach Haken
  • L’ovdah uleshomra
  • Shabbat
  • Long-term roots of the crisis/ sustainability
  • Tu b’Shevat
  • Prayer
Finally, the Jewcology Leadership Summits will be opportunities for Jewish environmentalists to:
  • meet in person
  • learn to use the Jewcology Portal
  • receive leadership training
  • learn Torah
  • pitch projects to possible funders
At this time the summits are tentatively scheduled for October 2010 in the Washington, DC area and February 2011 in the Bay Area (San Francisco).

These resources, supported by the generous funding of ROI, will be created as a resource for the entire Jewish-environmental community.
